Three District residents have been arrested and charged with separate cases of animal cruelty.
Michelle Terrell, 26, of the 4400 of Gault Place NE, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly abandoning her dog. It was the second time Terrell has been arrested on an animal cruelty charge in less than a year, police said.
Ronald and Evelyn Hamlin, ages 35 and 37, were arrested Monday and and accused of failing to provide their dog with proper food, space and veterinary care.
Humane Society law enforcement officers said Terrell left her new dog gated in the bathroom of her apartment for at least four days while she stayed with a friend. Police said they found the dog in the bathroom with no food or clean water and a large accumulation of feces and urine.
The dog was ultimately put to death due to severe behavior issues.
Terrell was previously arrested in September 2011 for leaving a different dog tied to her back door while she was away for three days. The dog became entangled in its leash and died from exhaustion in the 90-plus degree weather, police said.
Authorities said the Hamlins’ dog, Rocky, had been kept with no bedding in a crate made for a dog half its size for up to 20 hours a day. Rocky was emaciated with severe congenital skeletal deformations as well as calluses onboth legs and a severely infected sore on one leg, police said. His coat was covered in urine and fecal staining.
