Men sentenced for basketball court shooting

Two D.C. men were sentenced this week to nine years and two months in prison for an afternoon shooting at a basketball court in April 2009.

Edward Reid-Peeler, 20, and Dayontae J. Duncan, 21, pleaded guilty in May to assault and weapons charges.

Authorities say the two men shot a man who was playing basketball at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School because they wrongly believed the victim had cooperated with law enforcement in a Prince George’s County homicide trial. Duncan testified as an alibi witness for the defendant in that trial.

Second body found at Ball’s Bluff

For the second time this week, a body has been discovered at Ball’s Bluff Regional Park in Leesburg.

Police said the body of a Leesburg man was found at about 1 a.m. Wednesday. The death is believed to be a suicide.

There are no indications that the death is connected to an apparent homicide under investigation by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office. Remains were found at the scene of a fire near the park Monday evening. The victim was identified Tuesday as 52-year-old Cornelia M. Arnold of Leesburg. The cause and manner of her death are under investigation.

Cause of MontCo bus crash under investigation

Police are investigating the cause of a bus crash that sent 13 people to the hospital Wednesday morning.

A RideOn bus collided with a van on Route 355 at about 7:20 a.m. Wednesday, Montgomery County police Capt. Paul Starks said. The incident occurred on South Frederick Road near Ridgemont Avenue, less than a mile south of the Interstate 370 interchange.

Starks said four people were taken to Suburban Hospital and nine were taken to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. Ten of the injuries were minor, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Department. Lanes of Route 355 — a major artery in the area — were closed for about 90 minutes.

Wednesday afternoon, police did not have updates on the victims’ conditions or the cause of the crash.
