Prosecutors decided not to pursue charges against one of the Georgetown University freshmen who was arrested over the weekend after an alleged drug lab was found at a campus dorm.
The charges were dropped against John Romano, but Georgetown freshman Charles Smith and University of Richmond freshman John Perrone were held in custody until a detention hearing Wednesday. The two 18-year-olds are charged with conspiracy to manufacture and possess and distribute a hallucinogenic drug known as DMT. The charging offenses carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison.
Police said the students maintained a drug lab on the ninth floor of Harbin Hall, and officers evacuated the building Saturday after finding hazardous materials in the dorm room of Smith and Romano. — Scott McCabe
