On this day, Oct. 13, in 1970, the FBI captured most-wanted fugitive Angela Davis in New York City in connection with the courtroom kidnapping and murder of a California judge.

Three months earlier, Davis, 26, an ousted University of California, Los Angeles, professor, had helped create a defense fund for three men — known as the Soledad Brothers — in the slaying of a prison guard.
On Aug. 7, guns that she purchased were used in a botched attempt to break the men out of the Marin County courthouse. Four men were killed in the shootout, including the judge.
Davis disappeared and became the third woman to be placed on the FBI list of the 10 most-wanted fugitives.
She was tried and a jury found Davis not guilty. She later became a candidate for vice president on the Communist Party USA ticket.
