On this day, June 25, in 1996, a truck bomb exploded outside the Khobar Towers building in Saudi Arabia, killing 19 U.S. servicemen.

Terrorists converted a tanker truck into a bomb, packing it with up to 5,000 pounds of explosives, and parked it next to the housing complex for American military men and women.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Alfredo R. Guerrero saw the men leave the truck and flee in another vehicle. He alerted security, which began evacuating the eight-story building. Guerrero’s actions saved dozens of lives.

Fourteen men were indicted in federal court in Alexandria. Saudi Arabia has said it has arrested and imprisoned some of the bombers, but will not extradite the men to the United States.
