Witnesses are expected to begin testifying today in the trial of a Baltimore City man accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s Columbia apartment and stabbing her boyfriend.
Kazeem Akinyoade Akinniyi, 26, of Woolverton Avenue, is charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, reckless endangerment, burglary and related offenses, according to court records.
The trial before Howard Circuit Judge Lenore Gelfman was delayed Tuesday morning so Akinniyi could get a routine health checkup.
In the afternoon, opening arguments took place after Akinniyi rejected a plea deal that would have sentenced him to nine years in prison, said Wayne Kirwan, spokesman for the State’s Attorney’s Office.
Attempted murder carries a life in prison sentence, he added.
Akinniyi is accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend, Joseph Bolden, on Dec. 23, 2007, at their apartment on the 5900 block of Turnabout Lane, police said.
Bolden’s eight stab wounds required immediate surgery, police said.
The ex-girlfriend, who was not injured, also said Akinniyi had tried to stab her but missed, court records stated.
While trying to escape, Akinniyi jumped out the window and suffered a leg injury after falling three stories to the ground, according to court records.
