Feds say contractor stole $1m meant for global health

A former deputy director of a USAID contractor and his wife have been indicted on charges of embezzling more than $1 million meant for global heath, prosecutors said. Mark Adams, 43, and Latasha Bell, 36, of Fort Washington, are accused in the 23-count indictment of using the money to renovate their home and purchase two luxury cars worth more than $110,000. The money was meant to address issues such as HIV/AIDS around the world. The couple each faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Bell and Adams pleaded not guilty at their arraignment Wednesday at federal court in Washington.
Ad responders attacked
Two women were physically assaulted in Alexandria after responding to an apartment advertisement, authorities said. At about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, the women were responding to the ad in the 2200 block of Mill Road when a man grabbed them and pulled them into a vacant building. The victims were hit, but fought back and escaped, according to Alexandria police officials. The assailant is described as a white man, 20 to 30 years old, tall, with a thin build. His dark hair was in a ponytail and he was wearing a long black coat and black pants. Anyone with information can call police at 703-746-6711.
MS-13 member captured
A member of the MS-13 gang wanted for a murder in his native Honduras was apprehended in Maryland. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officials said authorities located 29-year-old Oscar Orlando Amador Centeno at a home in Randallstown on Monday. He is accused of killing a man in Olancho, Honduras, by striking him in the head with a machete in July 2010. In January 2010, Centeno was deported from the United States for illegally entering the country. He illegally re-entered the United States at some point later.
