Man gets 24 years in foiled robbery
A 52-year-old man was sentenced to 24 years in prison for a foiled armed robbery of an Upper Marlboro sandwich shop.
Federal prosecutors in Maryland say Timothy Anthony Hubbard, of Lothian, was a career offender with nine previous convictions for armed robbery dating back to 1980.
According to his plea agreement, in February 2010, Hubbard walked into Jerry’s Subs and Pizza at 5720 Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro, carrying a semiautomatic handgun and a steel pipe wired to a cellphone to look like a bomb.
Hubbard threatened to detonate the “bomb.” When Hubbard looked away, the owner jumped on him and began hitting him, causing Hubbard to drop the gun. Police arrested him as he ran outside.
Prosecution expert allowed to examine Muth
A judge ruled that prosecutors can have their own mental health expert examine Albrecht Muth, court records show.
Muth, 47, is charged with the August murder of his socialite wife, 91-year-old Viola Drath, in their Georgetown home. He has been at St. Elizabeths Hospital under court order since February.
A mental health report filed Monday by St. Elizabeths found that Muth was incompetent to stand trial but could become competent. Muth has been diagnosed with a delusional disorder and a personality disorder.
Man indicted in murder of Md. teen
A man has been indicted in the killing of a North Carolina teenager who went missing while visiting relatives in Maryland.
Michael Johnson is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 16-year-old Phylicia Barnes, who went missing while visiting her half sister in Baltimore in December 2010, Baltimore State’s Attorney Gregg Bernstein announced. Johnson, the boyfriend of Barnes’ half sister, was the last person to see the teenager alive, Bernstein said.
Barnes’ body was found in the Susquehanna River last April.
