D.C. police provided an escort for the N.Y. Rangers hockey team on Saturday while the team was in the District for playoff game versus the Capitals, several sources confirmed to The Washington Examiner.
The Saturday escort from the team’s hotel in D.C. to the Verizon Center, and then from the Verizon Center to Union Station following the Rangers’ 3-1 loss to the Capitals was paid for by the New York team, sources said.
The police escort was just one day after D.C. police Chief Cathy Lanier said in a statement that “our written policy states that police vehicles shall be used for escort duty only for the purpose of providing security for the president and vice president of the United States and such visiting heads of state or their representatives who may require extra-ordinary protective measures.”
Lanier made the comment in response to actor Charlie Sheen’s April 19 police escort on his way to a performance at DAR Constitution Hall.
A Lanier spokeswoman on Monday did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding Saturday’s escort for the Rangers.
