Fairfax forklift operator dies after beam falls A 47-year-old forklift operator died in an accident while on the job, Fairfax County police said.
Shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday, police were called to the 4100 block of Lafayette Center Drive in Chantilly.
An investigation revealed that a forklift being operated by Gerardo Santiago Paulette Ruiz struck an overhead beam while Ruiz was trying to go through a doorway in a warehouse area of a business called the Teaching Company. The beam fell onto Ruiz and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ruiz, who is from Herndon, was a longtime employee of the company, police spokesman Officer Don Gotthardt said.
Embassy worker accused of bribery
An employee at the U.S. Embassy in Caracas, Venezuela, was arrested on bribery and conspiracy charges for allegedly accepting payments to facilitate visa applications.
Between March 2011 and January, 43-year-old Christian Adolfo Paredes Uzcategui allegedly obtained illegal payments for assisting people who applied for visas to enter the United States. He made more than $10,000 through the scheme, which primarily involved people who had previously been denied visas, prosecutors said. He has worked at the embassy since 1997.
Girl, 10, shot in Northeast D.C.
A 10-year-old girl was shot in Northeast D.C. Monday morning, police said.
The girl and another person were in a car traveling westbound on the 1400 block of New York Avenue when a white vehicle traveling in the same direction fired shots at the vehicle with the girl in it, striking her in the leg, D.C. police spokesman Officer Anthony Clay said.
The girl was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover. Police described the occupants of the white vehicle as three females and one male.
