Pentagon tightens security post-shooting

Security surrounding the Pentagon is tightening following the March 4 shooting that injured two police officers, officials said.

Authorities will be screening Pentagon visitors more heavily, improving outdoor lighting and working to better monitor activity at the Pentagon Metro station, which is one of the busiest in the Washington region.

On March 4, John Patrick Bedell opened fire at police officers guarding a Pentagon entrance close to the Metro station. Two of the guards were injured before Bedell was shot to death.

Authorities have said the Pentagon police acted quickly and appropriately to contain Bedell. The Pentagon already is in the midst of a five-year security overhaul.
