D.C. cop convicted in iPad, electronics sting

 

A District of Columbia police officer has been found guilty of attempting to receive stolen property.

Dioni Fernandez, 35, was one of three police officers caught in a sting aimed at weeding out corrupt cops. The 35-year-old Fernandez and the other officers purchased iPads, televisions and other electronic equipment that they believed were stolen.

Fernandez was found guilty Wednesday after a four-day trial in D.C. Superior Court. He’s scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 27.

The other officers, Silvestre Bonilla and Guillermo Ortiz, have already pleaded guilty. Ortiz was sentenced to supervised probation, while Bonilla is awaiting sentencing.

D.C. man gets five years for sex with 13-year-old

A District man was sentenced to five years in prison for sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl after plying her with alcohol.

Pedro Funes, 21, pleaded in June to first-degree child sexual abuse. He admitted that he and another man had sexual intercourse with the girl who was heavily intoxicated and going in and out of consciousness, prosecutors said.

Alexandria man arrested in home improvement scam   

An Alexandria man is accused of ripping off several Maryland homeowners in a home improvement scheme.

Montgomery County police said Karl Leroy Davis, 42, would promise to do the work and cash the checks without making any improvements. The alleged scam occurred in Rockville, Silver Spring and Gaithersburg.

Police say there might be more victims. Anyone who believes they were swindled in this alleged scam can call police at 240-773-5500.
