Prince William County officials honored 18-year-old Chris Berger on Tuesday for risking his life to pull a man from an overturned and burning sport utility vehicle.
On Aug. 21, Berger was traveling down Logmill Road in Haymarket when a woman waved him down and pointed toward an upside-down Hummer engulfed in flames.
Berger said he didn’t intend to get close to the vehicle but he heard someone knocking from the inside. He ran to the SUV and yanked open the door. Smoke came rolling out. Berger yelled and the man crawled toward the sound of his voice until the teen could pull him to safety. By the time fire officials arrived, the SUV was engulfed in flames and nearby trees were on fire.
Said Police Chief Charlie T. Deane: “Chris demonstrated a selfless regard for others.” – Scott McCabe
