Woman fatally shoots self at Fairfax Target store

UPDATE, 2:31 p.m.: Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder wrote in an email that the woman was a customer and the store remained closed Tuesday afternoon due to the investigation.

“The team at Target would like to share that our thoughts and sympathies are with the guest’s family during this difficult time. To respect their privacy, we have nothing further to share,” she wrote. She said Target was “deeply committed” to the safety of guests and store employees.

ORIGINAL POST: A woman shot and killed herself Tuesday morning at a Fairfax County Target store, police said.

Officers received a report of gunshots at the Target store at 10301 New Guinea Road in Burke at about 11:30 a.m., said Officer Don Gotthardt, a police spokesman.

A woman was found suffering gunshot wounds inside the Target store there, Gotthardt said. The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the woman intentionally shot herself, Gotthardt said. He said he didn’t know exactly where she was shot or how many times, but she suffered trauma to her upper body.

Gotthardt said a store employee found the wounded woman, but he did not know whether the woman worked at the store.

The woman’s name was not released.
