Police seek Pr. William copper thief

Police are trying to find out who has been breaking into Dale City and Woodbridge homes and stealing copper piping since June. A rash of burglaries and thefts have been reported at vacant houses or homes being renovated, Prince William County police said. Officers said copper piping, which is often found near water heaters and other appliances, appears to be the main target.

Copper can cost a few dollars a pound, and thieves can make cash quickly by selling the piping as scrap metal. Police said removal of the piping has caused major water damage and gas leaks at some of the homes.

A total of 25 incidents have been reported: one in June, two in July, 13 in August and nine in September.

Anyone with information can call police at 703-792-6500.
