Crime History: Body in leather mask found burned on estate

Body in leather mask found burned on estate

On this day, March 17, in 1985, five hikers in New York stumbled upon the charred remains of a human body wearing only a black-leather mask on the estate of a United Nations executive.

Police quickly arrested Bernard J. LeGeros, 22, for the murder of Eigil Vesti, a male fashion student from Norway. LeGeros was the son of the U.N.’s chief of development programs.

Vesti was tortured and sexually assaulted and then shot in the back of the head.

Police said LeGeros shot Vesti, 26, twice with a .22-caliber rifle after a night of sadomasochistic sex.

LeGeros blamed another man and said Vesti already had been stabbed to death when he fired the weapon.

LeGeros was convicted of murder and got 25 years to life in prison.
