Man posed as ICE agent to cheat immigrants

A Germantown man pleaded guilty to impersonating an Immigration and Customers Enforcement officer to cheat dozens of immigrants out of about $700,000.

Robert Fred Mejia, 29, and his co-conspirator had an office in Gaithersburg where they charged $5,000 to take fingerprints and file immigration paperwork, but the duo never submitted the paperwork, prosecutors said. Prosecutors estimated there were between 50 and 250 victims.

Prosecutors said Mejia dressed as a federal agent and wore what appeared to be a gun in a holster and a bulletproof vest. He displayed a badge and drove a vehicle that resembled a police vehicle.

Mejia also admitted that he illegally possessed 50 rounds of 9mm ammunition and 49 rounds of .44-40 ammunition.

He faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

About 100 demonstrators were arrested outside the White House protesting against mountaintop removal mining.

The protesters were arrested Monday after refusing orders from U.S. Park Police to leave the sidewalk outside the White House. The crowd carried signs like “Blowing Up Mountains for Coal Poisons People.” Some carried small white crosses adorned with messages such as “water pollution” and “corporate greed.”
