‘Bespectacled Bandit’ strikes 9 D.C. banks

He peers over his reading spectacles like a professor at an unruly student. But he’s not in a classroom, he’s in a bank and he has just passed the teller a note demanding cash.

The Bespectacled Bandit has robbed nine banks since November. In each robbery, police say, he wears reading glasses and often dons a hooded coat.

Police described him as a black man in his late 40s to early 60s. He has a dark complexion and stands between 5 feet 6 inches and 6 feet 1 inch tall. He has a thin build and a long, narrow face.

His first known bank robbery was Nov. 23, when he hit a Chevy Chase Bank at 336 Pennsylvania Ave. SE.

He robbed eight others as follows:

Jan. 6: Chevy Chase Bank, 1299 Pennsylvania Ave. NW

March 8: Chevy Chase Bank, 650 F St. NW

March 12: PNC Bank, 650 Pennsylvania Ave. NW

March 25: Chevy Chase Bank, 1200 F St. NW

April, 21: Chevy Chase Bank, 701 Pennsylvania Ave. NW

April 26: Chevy Chase Bank, 925 15th St. NW

May 11: PNC Bank, 1100 H St. NW

May 11: PNC Bank, 1913 Massachusetts Ave. NW

Anyone with information on any of these robberies is asked to call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). Crime Solvers has offered a reward for up to $1,000 for any information that leads to an arrest or indictment of the suspect.
