Columbia cat hoarder gets suspended jail time for not allowing inspections

An elderly Columbia woman was given a suspended sentence of one week in jail for not complying with court-ordered Animal Control inspections at the town house where she hoarded more than 75 dead and dying cats.

Ayten Icgoren, 81, blamed the violation on “scheduling conflicts,” saying she wasn’t home when officers asked to inspect her Swan Point Way residence.

Howard Circuit Judge J. Thomas Nissel responded by sending Animal Control officers Wednesday to conduct the inspection that afternoon, where they found one cat belonging to Icgoren’s daughter and no health hazards, said defense attorney Arthur Reynolds Jr.

Nissel imposed one week in jail, all of which was suspended, for violating the terms of her release while she awaits sentencing in January on her 21 animal cruelty convictions. He denied the prosecutor’s request to revoke Icgoren’s bond.
