Construction worker dies at Georgetown University

 

A forklift operator was killed at a construction site at Georgetown University.

Shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday, D.C. fire and rescue units were dispatched for a report of an injured person at an underground industrial site under a new science center near the student center on the 3800 block of Reservoir Road, D.C. fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said.

The worker, a 36-year-old woman, was operating a forklift and became pinned between an overhead railing and scaffolding. She died at the George Washington Hospital Trauma Center.

Pickpocket admits targeting bus, Metro riders

A D.C. pickpocket pleaded guilty in a scheme to target bus and Metro passengers.

Alexander Barnwell, 55, was arrested after an investigation into a series of pickpocketing incidents in and around Metro stations and bus stops, including the Farragut North Metro station, Union Station, and the bus loading area on the 1000 block of New York Avenue NW.

On Jan. 14, he and an accomplice bumped into a young woman as she boarded a charter bus on New York Avenue. One of them reached into her bag and stole her wallet, Barnwell admitted. He also admitted to a stealing a credit card from a 90-year-old man at Farragut North in August 2009.

Extra DUI patrols in Md.

Maryland State Police are stepping up patrols this week in an effort to prevent St. Patrick’s Day partiers from driving home drunk.

Extra troopers will be on the roads in all counties for a DUI saturation patrol Thursday and Friday.

Police advise that drinkers have a sober friend drive them home, take a cab or use public transportation.

From 4 p.m. Thursday to 4 p.m. Friday, cab rides worth up to $30 are being provided free in the Washington area through the Washington Regional Alcohol Program by calling 800-200-TAXI.
