The two planes involved in a mid-air collision in Fauquier County were owned by employees of the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration.
The crash happened shortly after 4 p.m. Monday near Sumerduck.
One plane caught fire and the aircraft’s pilot and a passenger were killed, according to Virginia State Police. An employee of the NTSB is the registered owner of that plane, a BE-35, the agency said.
The Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is identifying the two killed through DNA, authorities said.
The operator of the second plane, a Piper PA-28, was FAA employee Thomas R. Proven, according to the NTSB. Proven, 70, survived the crash but was injured.
The NTSB, which normally investigates plane crashes, has turned the investigation over to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada because the incident involved NTSB and FAA employees.
