Gas guzzler: Thieves harvest over $4,000 worth of fuel from New York farm

Thieves can be a real pain in the gas, especially if they steal $4,100 worth of diesel fuel.

Almost 800 gallons of the fuel was stolen from the Lloyd Crest farm in New York, according to the owners. Tim Lloyd and Cindy Bonnaci, the farm’s owners, had just spent $5,400 on 1,050 gallons of fuel, with each gallon costing them $5.19, the Times Union reported Wednesday.

“I just want the fuel back. Even if you drop it off in the middle of the night, we’d be happy. $5,400 is a lot of money,” Bonnaci said.

The fuel was purchased on June 22, and the fuel tanks were empty by Friday. Lloyd and Bonnaci filed a police report after they noticed the missing fuel while trying to fill up a tractor to mow hay.

Many people are growing increasingly desperate amid the increasing price of fuel, Bonnaci said, noting that the diesel could be used to fuel furnaces.

The average price of diesel per gallon in New York was $6.19 on Friday, and the national average was $5.76. The price per gallon in the state at the same time in 2021 was $3.32 and the national average $3.24, according to AAA.

President Joe Biden urged people to wait “as long as it takes” when asked how long the public should expect to pay higher gas prices as a result of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“This is a critical, critical position for the world,” Biden said during a Thursday press conference.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has not responded to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
