Police officer charged in drug conspiracy
Twelve people, including a D.C. police officer, have been indicted in connection with a conspiracy to sell crack cocaine and heroin on the streets of the District and Prince George’s County.
Law enforcement officers seized three guns, more than $20,000 in cash, more than a pound of heroin, 20 ounces of crack cocaine and four ounces of powder cocaine, and 10 pounds of marijuana.
Eleven defendants were arrested and charged Wednesday, including D.C. police officer Tamara McGuire, 33.
The investigation began in July 2009.
Life sentence in murder of cab driver
A Landover man has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2008 slaying of a taxi driver near FedEx Field.
Christian E. Brooks, 27, was sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years for killing Tekola Bekele, of Silver Spring.
A jury found Brooks guilty of first-degree murder and other offenses earlier this summer.
Brooks flagged down Bekele while the 53-year-old was driving his cab near FedEx Field in Landover on Oct. 15, 2008. He then shot Bekele in the back of the head, pulled his body out of the cab and drove away.
Bank robbed near U.Md.
Police are investigating an armed bank robbery near the campus of the University of Maryland.
The incident happened at the M&T Bank in the 4500 block of Knox Road in College Park. Shortly after noon Thursday, a man entered the bank, displayed a handgun and demanded money. After taking the cash, he fled on foot.
The robber is described as a black man, 25-30 years of age, 120-130 pounds, close haircut, thin mustache, wearing a red cap, a striped blue polo shirt with the number “2” on the shoulder, and shorts.
