At least 15 dead and more than 60 injured after weekend of mass shootings

As many as 15 people died over the weekend, and more than 60 others were injured in shootings across the country. The recent spate of shootings puts the country on track for one of the deadliest years on record, with at least 246 mass shootings recorded so far in 2022, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

Clarendon County, South Carolina

One person died and another seven were injured after a drive-by shooting at a high school graduation party on Saturday in Clarendon County, South Carolina.

Two vehicles approached the house where the party was being held, with one car driving into the yard and the other staying on the road, according to police. Someone then fired into the crowd. It’s unclear whether the shooting was targeted or random, officers said.

There were roughly 150 people attending the party at the time of the shooting, and at least 60-70 rounds were shot into the crowd. Police are unsure whether some members of the crowd attempted to fire back.

Police have not determined a motive for the attack but believe it may be gang-related, officials said. No arrests have been made, and it’s unclear whether police have identified a suspect.

Chattanooga, Tennessee

Fourteen people were shot and another three were hit by cars trying to run away during a shooting outside a Tennessee bar early Sunday morning, according to local police. At least three people have died.

Two of the deceased victims died from gunshot wounds, and the third died after being run over by a car driven by a gunman trying to flee the scene. Police believe multiple shooters are responsible for the incident.

The incident coincided with another shooting just three miles away in downtown Chattanooga, where three people were shot and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Officials say the two incidents don’t appear to be connected.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

At least three people were killed and another 11 injured after multiple shooters opened fire into a Philadelphia crowd on Saturday evening.

Police recovered two guns from the scene, with one of them having an extended magazine, according to officials. An officer fired back at the gunman, prompting the shooter to drop his weapon and flee the scene. It’s not clear whether the shooter was injured. No arrests have been made.

Just a few blocks away, another shooting took place around 11 p.m. Saturday, although police say it’s not clear whether the two are connected.

Phoenix, Arizona

One person died and another eight were injured after a shooting at a strip mall in Phoenix, Arizona, on Saturday.

Nine people were transported to local hospitals, where a 14-year-old girl died from her injuries. Two adult females were transported with life-threatening injuries, and six others had non-life-threatening injuries.

It’s not clear whether officials have identified a suspect, and no arrests have been made. Police responded to the shooting just about an hour after officials reported a teenage boy was shot and killed outside his home three blocks away from the mall. It’s not clear whether the two incidents are related.

Socorro, Texas

Five teenagers were hospitalized after a fight broke out at a high school graduation party in West Texas around 1 a.m. on Saturday.

Roughly 100 people were at the party when the shooting began, with five being transported to area hospitals. At least two of the teenagers are in critical condition, according to the Associated Press. 

It’s not clear whether a suspect has been identified, and no arrests have been made.

Macon, Georgia

At least one person died and another three were injured after a shooting at an abandoned house in Macon, Georgia, on Saturday night.

Police responded to the scene after receiving reports of gunfire around 6:50 p.m. Three of the victims transported themselves to the hospital, where they remain in stable condition.

Police found the fourth victim at the scene and transported him to the hospital, where he died from his injuries. The victim was identified as 19-year-old Cleveland Raines.

It’s not clear whether police have identified a suspect, and officials said the incident remains under investigation.

Mesa, Arizona

Two people were killed and two were injured after a shooting at a bar in Mesa, Arizona, on Sunday.

Police responded to the scene around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday after receiving reports of gunfire, according to officials. Two of the victims were pronounced dead on the scene, and another two were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Three people have been arrested in connection to the shooting, and police said the incident is under investigation.
