England men’s soccer team get booed for taking knees before games

Fans booed the English men’s soccer team after players took a knee before a match.

Marcus Rashford, who is black, is the team captain and partook in the kneeling. He, like his teammates, was booed at the time but celebrated upon scoring the game-deciding goal in the 68th minute against Romania on June 6. The players who participated in the social justice protest also reportedly faced jeers during games Wednesday and Sunday.

“It’s something that we can’t control,” Rashford said. “For us, we believe it’s the right thing to do, so we’re going to continue.”

England coach Gareth Southgate called the situation a “very strange response,” saying, “I think I sadly sort of expected what happened to happen. That’s it. We are going to have to live with that.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson also weighed in on the boos.

He “would like to see everyone getting behind the team to cheer them on, not boo,” his spokesman, Jamie Davies, told reporters.

Davies urged fans to be “respectful,” but he didn’t outright condemn the people participating in the jeering.

The 2020 UEFA European Championship tournament, which was delayed a year because of the coronavirus pandemic, began Friday.
