Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease expert, recommended that people who are fully vaccinated do not need to wear a mask outside.
“We’ve got to make that transition,” Fauci said about vaccinated people who are still wearing face masks when outdoors, during a Thursday morning interview with CBS’s Gayle King.

“If you were vaccinated, you don’t have to wear a mask outside. We have a very unusual situation,” he continued. “If you were going into a completely crowded situation where people are essentially falling all over each other, then you wear a mask. But any other time, if you’re vaccinated and you’re outside, put aside your mask. You don’t have to wear it.”
King prompted the discussion by explaining that she approached another person in New York who was wearing a mask and, upon talking, discovered that they were both still wearing masks even though they were both vaccinated.
Fauci’s comments echo the most recent guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, released on April 27.
“If you are fully vaccinated and want to attend a small outdoor gathering with people who are vaccinated and unvaccinated … the science shows, if you’re vaccinated, you can do so safely,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said at the time.

The updated guidance urges people who are fully vaccinated to continue to socially distance and wear masks indoors in public places such as hair salons, malls, movie theaters, and other venues where people’s vaccination status is unknown.
