Miah Cerrillo, a fourth grader who survived the shooting last month, reportedly covered herself in a killed classmate’s blood in an effort to play dead to escape the shooter’s notice. Cerrillo will be among the witnesses at the hearing scheduled for Wednesday, per the committee.
AGE HIKE FOR SEMI-AUTOMATIC PURCHASES AMONG GUN CONTROL BILLS SET FOR HOUSE VOTES
https://twitter.com/noraneus/status/1530152774641635331In a statement, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), chairwoman of the committee, said, “After 19 innocent children and two teachers lost their lives in Texas just ten days after the mass shooting in my home state of New York, I’m turning my anger into action.”
“Our hearing will examine the terrible impact of gun violence and the urgent need to rein in the weapons of war used to perpetrate these crimes,” Maloney said. “It is my hope that all my colleagues will listen with an open heart as gun violence survivors and loved ones recount one of the darkest days of their lives. This hearing is ultimately about saving lives, and I hope it will galvanize my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass legislation to do just that.”
The hearing will also include testimony from Felix and Kimberly Rubio, whose daughter Lexi was killed during the Robb Elementary School shooting, and Zeneta Everhart, whose son Zaire Goodman was injured in a shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, which authorities have said was racially motivated.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said this week that the House will take up gun measures next week in response to the recent mass shootings, including the Protecting Our Children Act, legislation that raises the required purchasing age for semi-automatic weapons from 18 to 21, and bans on high-capacity magazines and bump stocks for civilian use, as well as other new restrictions.

The House is likely to pass the legislation, but it faces a more difficult path in the Senate, where Republicans are unlikely to embrace a bill as broad in scope.
Senate Democratic leadership would need to secure 10 Republican votes to clear the upper chamber’s 60-vote filibuster threshold and send any gun bills to President Joe Biden’s desk. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) called for bipartisan negotiations toward a bill Republicans would support, and some Senate Republicans are participating in negotiations, with some indicating they would support enhancing background checks or incentivizing states to pass red flag laws, but any specific agreement is not yet clear.
