Germany sending thousands of anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine: Report

Germany has reportedly announced they are sending more lethal aid to the embattled Ukrainian government.

Germany will send 2,700 Soviet-era “STRELA-type” anti-aircraft missiles, which can be used against helicopters and aircraft, according to the German news agency DPA.

“Germany’s economic ministry has approved the delivery of 2,700 anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine,” the German outlet tweeted.

This aid follows earlier German shipments and marks a continued departure from its initial position of only sending non-lethal supplies.

Ukraine previously received shipments of 1,000 anti-tank missiles and 500 anti-aircraft missiles, as well as 18,000 helmets from the German government.

The Germans were initially criticized in late January for only sending 5,000 helmets at a time when many countries, including the United States, were providing Ukraine with millions of dollars worth of weapons and supplies.

“The behaviour of the German government leaves me speechless. The defence ministry apparently hasn’t realized that we are confronted with perfectly equipped Russian forces,” Kyiv’s mayor told German newspaper Bild at the time of the shipment.

Despite initial assumptions that the Russian invasion force would quickly gain air superiority, an American senior defense official said Monday that “the Russians have not achieved air superiority over the whole country.” He also said that Ukrainian skies remain a “contested” and “dynamic” airspace.

The Ukrainian government is claiming in their latest casualty update that they have killed over 7,000 Russian troops and destroyed dozens of planes and helicopters along with hundreds of tanks and armored vehicles. Russia disputes these claims and acknowledges only 500 troops killed and approximately 1,500 injured during the invasion.
