House Democrats are looking on the bright side as the midterm elections come to an end, with several races still undecided.
While control of the House is up in the air, Republicans now hold 207 seats compared to Democrats’ 184. However, Democrats performed better than most expected, stopping a predicted “red wave” from sweeping the midterm elections.
“What’s taken place is absolutely groundbreaking,” Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) said to Axios. “It feels good to be a Democrat.”

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who won reelection on Wednesday after defeating challenger John Dennis, shared positive thoughts in a call to House Democrats. Leading the call with Pelosi was Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY), who lost reelection to GOP state lawmaker Mike Lawler.
Pelosi congratulated Democratic candidates for being “courageous” and having “the stamina to get the job done,” a source on the call told Axios.
“It is a remarkable achievement what all of us did working together,” Pelosi said.
Members were also informed that “everything would have to go right” in order for Democrats to keep the majority in the House. A majority of 218 members for either party is needed to win.
Several House Democrats have praised their party’s successes in the midterm elections while acknowledging further action that needs to be taken.
“I think Democrats did far better than anybody thought that they would,” Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) said, adding that Democrats still have to do “a better job speaking to and earning the support of working-class families.”
Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) spoke positively about the Democrats’ wins, emphasizing that Republicans are the ones who “need to do some self-reflection and some deep thinking.”
“This is not the kind of election where I think we have to, sort of, wring our hands and wonder what went wrong,” Cicilline said in an interview with Axios.
He added that he is “anxious” for the Democrats to benefit from talented, and some new, members who are waiting in the wings for their chance at leadership.
“We’ll have lots of people who are interested in leadership positions,” Cicilline said. “There is no question that there is a tremendous amount of talent, pent-up talent, in the Democratic caucus.”

Rep.-elect Maxwell Frost (D-FL) said he is “in favor of young folks being at the table as far as leadership is concerned.” He will be the first member of Generation Z to be elected to Congress.
