Pelosi hospitalized on congressional trip to Luxembourg

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was hospitalized after she sustained an injury while on a congressional trip in Luxembourg, a spokesperson for the congresswoman said Friday.

Specific details of the injury were not provided, but Pelosi will not participate in the delegation’s remaining events, held to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.

“Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals,” the spokesperson said in a release. “She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the CODEL engagements to honor the courage of our servicemembers during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation’s history.”

A photo of the lawmakers on the CODEL shows Pelosi holding tightly to the hand of Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX).

Multiple outlets reported that the hospitalization was due to a fall on the stairs, while the New York Times said Pelosi fractured her hip, citing sources close to her.

Pelosi’s spokesperson said she was “personally and officially” honored to travel with the delegation, many of whom had family members who fought in World War II, including her uncle.

“She looks forward to returning to the U.S. soon,” Pelosi’s team added.

Pelosi, now 84, announced in 2022 that she would step down after two decades in House leadership, allowing House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) to take the mantle. She had pledged in 2018 she would step down after four years.

The speaker emerita is the latest elder leader to face an injury this week. Outgoing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) fell leaving a GOP lunch on Tuesday. He had a scratch on his face that bled but was “100%” with it mentally, according to Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY). McConnell sprained his wrist, as well.

Congress has weathered a series of medical episodes, diagnoses, and deaths this term. Reps. Shelia Jackson Lee (D-TX), Donald Payne Jr. (D-NJ), and Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) all died during the 118th Congress, while others like Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA), Rep. Greg Murphy (R-NC), and Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) announced cancer or tumor diagnoses.
