On Monday, Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) filed the first articles of impeachment of President Donald Trump’s second term.
Thanedar, who also received a second primary challenger on Monday, filed seven articles for alleged abuse of power, constitutional violations, and tyranny.
“Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unfit to serve as president and represents a clear and present danger to our nation’s constitution and our democracy,” Thanedar said in a statement. “His unlawful actions have subverted the justice system, violated the separation of powers, and placed personal power and self-interest above public service. We cannot wait for more damage to be done. Congress must act.”
A resolution outlining the seven articles cites allegations that include denial of due process, unlawful deportations, defiance of court orders, misuse of the Justice Department, bribery and corruption for dismissing criminal cases and soliciting foreign emoluments, threatening military invasion against sovereign nations, and dismantling congressionally established agencies.
Trump is set to be in Michigan on Tuesday for a rally in the battleground state to mark the 100th day of his second term.
The White House slammed the move as desperate.
“Every action taken by President Trump and his administration is fully lawful and firmly rooted in the will of the American people,” said White House spokeswoman Liz Huston. “President Trump is doing exactly what he promised: securing our border, bringing in trillions of dollars in investment to America, and restoring common sense leadership. Meanwhile, Democrats are once again showing where their true priorities lie — siding with illegal immigrants over the safety, security, and well-being of hardworking American citizens. Their desperate impeachment stunt is nothing more than a reckless political act that the American people see right through.”
Democrats are in the minority in the House and Senate, so the prospect of any impeachment against Trump is unlikely unless they win back power in the 2026 midterm elections.
The House twice impeached Trump under Democratic control in his first term, but he was later twice acquitted by the Senate. Rep. Al Green (D-TX) said earlier this month that he, too, plans to file impeachment articles but had yet to do so as of Monday. Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) became the first senator last week to say Trump has committed impeachable offenses, but that political reality would prevent congressional action unless Democrats retake the House.
Thanedar has represented the Detroit area in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District since 2023 and is facing primary challenges from former state Sen. Adam Hollier and Michigan state Rep. Donavan McKinney, who is endorsed by Justice Democrats, the liberal group that helped Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) first win in 2018.

“This is not about partisanship,” Thanedar said of his impeachment articles. “It’s about protecting our democracy and ensuring that no one, not even a President, is above the law.”
Trump’s visit to the Great Lakes State, which proved crucial in his election victory last year, further spotlights the battleground that will also feature a contentious race for an open Senate seat next year to replace retiring Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI).
