House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said he “doesn’t see a path” for President Donald Trump to serve a third term, despite Trump suggesting otherwise.
“Well, there is the 22nd Amendment,” Johnson said at a press conference Tuesday, adding that he spoke with Trump that morning as the president continues on his tour of Asia.
“I don’t see a way to amend the Constitution, because it takes about 10 years to do that, as you all know, to allow all the states to ratify what two-thirds of the House and three-fourths of the states would approve,” Johnson added. “I don’t see the path for that.”
Trump ruled out running as vice president in 2028, telling reporters aboard Air Force One on Monday that it would be “too cute.” When asked about running for a third term, he said he would “love to,” but there is a possibility of an “unstoppable” ticket with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Trump will be 82 years old in 2028 if he were to attempt to serve another term, which would put him at 86 years old in 2032, making him the oldest president in history.
Trump and many of his allies have flirted with a third term and a fourth run, as Trump has refused to rule out the prospect, even going so far as to sell “Trump 2028” hats on the Trump store website.
The matter picked up heat last week after Steve Bannon, a close Trump ally and former White House staffer, said there is a “plan” to make a third term work.
“Trump is going to be president in ’28, and people just ought to get accommodated with that,” Bannon said in an interview.
Others claim it is the president’s way of trolling the other party, including Johnson, who said the Democrats’ “hair is on fire by the very prospect.”
The 22nd Amendment of the Constitution states, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice,” with many experts saying there is no way to go around it.
The White House referred the Washington Examiner to Trump’s comments on Monday when contacted.
