Trump donates $1 million to Mike Johnson for record-breaking fundraiser

DORAL, Florida — President Donald Trump donated $1 million to Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), bringing the speaker’s total amount to $20 million for a fundraiser he had on Monday.

The donation added to an already steep $19 million raised by the speaker’s fundraiser that Trump attended in Florida before joining the House Republican retreat. It is the highest amount raised by the speaker for a single roundtable fundraiser, according to Johnson’s office.

It’s unclear what the previous record was.

Trump announced he would be making his own donation during remarks in front of the Republican conference, but joked that the greatest thing about becoming president is that he doesn’t have to contribute to campaigns.

“But I heard you were at $19 million today,” Trump said to Johnson while speaking before House GOP members at their annual Issues Conference. “Has that ever been done? ‘No, sir, it’s a record, but 20 would sound better, right?’ …he said. I’m going to give you $1 million. It’s the first time I’ve done – I never did it before.”

The president spoke for nearly an hour as GOP members commenced their three-day retreat. He called the conference “one of the most consequential Republican majorities” in history.

“It’s not a big majority, but it’s just about the most consequential,” the president said. “The job you’ve done is incredible.”
