House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a supporter of Rep. Elise Stefanik for chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, is fine with potential challengers to the Upstate New York congresswoman for the position.
DESPITE SOME GOP OPPOSITION, MCCARTHY PLANS FRIDAY VOTE TO REPLACE CHENEY WITH STEFANIK
“It’s always healthy to have debate. That’s what you have. You have primaries and others when you’re filling a seat. Anybody can run,” McCarthy told the Washington Examiner Thursday.
Stefanik is the odds-on favorite to be elected as the next House Republican Conference leader after lawmakers on Wednesday ousted Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming for the position over her criticism of former President Donald Trump.
However, other Republican lawmakers’ names began to be floated as possible challengers to Stefanik, including Rep. Chip Roy of Texas and Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana. Neither person has made a declaration of his intention to run for conference leader presently.
In a statement Wednesday, Roy declared he was “not ruling anything out,” adding that “this must be a contested race — not a coronation.”
