Miami police lieutenant arrested on sexual battery charges

A Florida police lieutenant and former union leader was arrested on sexual battery charges Friday.

Lt. John Jenkins of the Miami-Dade Police Department was booked into a Palm Beach County jail at 9:47 p.m. on two counts of sexual battery of a person 18 years or older, according to the county’s booking database.

“It has brought a sense of disappointment that is immeasurable,” Miami-Dade Police Department Director Alfredo Ramirez said in a statement Saturday, according to Local 10.

“This is a serious matter, and I am confident that the City of Palm Beach Gardens Police Department will continue to carry out a thorough investigation,” Ramirez said.

Ramirez was previously notified of the alleged incident, which occurred when Jenkins was off-duty April 25 in the city of Palm Beach Gardens, he said.

In addition to being a lieutenant, Jenkins was previously the executive vice president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association. He reportedly resigned from his position with the union last week.
