A reporter who had previously worked with the New York Times was killed when Russian troops opened fire on a vehicle carrying foreign journalists who had been trying to film refugees.
Kyiv Police Chief Andriy Nebytov wrote in a Facebook post Sunday morning that 51-year-old Brent Renaud had been shot and killed, while “another journalist,” documentary photojournalist Juan Arredondo, was left injured, adding that they were trying to remove the victim from the war zone. The incident had taken place in the city of Irpin, Nebytov confirmed in his post.

“Of course, the profession of a journalist is a risk, but US citizen Brent Renaud paid his life for trying to highlight the aggressor’s ingenuity, cruelty and ruthlessness,” Nebytov said in the post.

Cliff Levy, the deputy managing editor of the New York Times, confirmed Renaud’s death and said that the outlet was “deeply saddened to learn of” his death.
Levy praised Renaud for being a “talented photographer and filmmaker,” adding that while he had “contributed to The New York Times over the years,” he had not been on “assignment for any desk at The Times in Ukraine.”
Levy acknowledged that “early reports” of the incident speculated that Renaud had been working on assignment because he had been wearing his press pass associated with the outlet.
Arredondo, a U.S. citizen, is responsive and currently undergoing surgery, according to the Guardian.
Arredondo said in an interview in a hospital bed that they had been crossing “one of the first bridge,” where they were going to film refugees leaving the area.
“We got in to a car, somebody offered to take us to the other bridge and we crossed a checkpoint and they start shooting at us,” Arredondo said. “So, the driver turned around and they kept shooting. There was two of us, my friend Brent Renaud. And, he’s been shot and left behind.”
When asked how Renaud was, Arredondo said he didn’t know, adding that he “saw him being shot in the neck” before they were split up.

The former mayor of Irpin from 2014 to 2018 said in a Facebook post on Tuesday that the city was experiencing a “humanitarian disaster,” adding that people were starving and Russian armed forces had shelled the hospital and were shooting homes, according to the Hill.
Additionally, the people of the city were dealing with a lack of food, water, and electricity as a result of the attack.
