California Gov. Gavin Newsom believes that Democrats are getting “destroyed” on messaging and “crushed on narrative” as the midterm elections loom ahead.
In a CBS interview aired on Wednesday, Newsom said the midterm election feels like a “red wave” is coming and Democrats are not doing enough to prevent it.
“We’re getting crushed on narrative,” he said to CBS chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett. “We’re going to have to do better in terms of getting on the offense and stop being on the damn defense.”

This is not the first time Newsom has tried to spurn his party into action. At the Texas Tribune Festival in September, he called on Democrats to be more aggressive, per the Hill.
“These guys are ruthless on the other side,” Newsom said. “Where are we? Where are we organizing, bottom-up, a compelling alternative narrative? Where are we going on the offense every single day? They’re winning right now.”
Newsom added that while Democrats have attempted to tone down the prospect of Republicans gaining significant seats in the House and Senate, he is being more “pragmatic.”
“I’m not paid to say that,” he said. “I’m paid to say, you know, ‘fate and feel.’ I mean, I get it. Look, I mean, I could be the cheerleader. I’m also pragmatic, you feel it.”
Newsom is one of several Democrats floated as a 2024 presidential candidate. Over recent months, Newsom has sparked presidential speculation with a slew of political maneuverings, such as launching several ad campaigns against high-profile GOP members such as Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
