Robert Findlay Smith, who was an occasional attendee of the church, was arrested on capital murder charges. Police have not yet determined a motive in the shooting but believe Smith acted alone.

At least three people were shot at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, on Thursday night, and all three victims have since succumbed to their injuries, according to police.
Walter Rainey, 84, was pronounced dead shortly after first responders arrived on the scene, and Sarah Yeager, 75, died later that night after being transported to a nearby hospital. A third victim, who was only identified as an 84-year-old woman, died the next day.

Parishioners were participating in a “Boomer’s Potluck Dinner” when the gunman opened fire. An attendee of the dinner subdued the suspected shooter and held him down until police arrived on the scene.
Smith is being held at the Jefferson County Jail with no bond.
