Over the weekend, New Jersey senator Bob Menendez, a Democrat who was just reelected, sat for a Sunday interview with CNN’s Candy Crowley. They discussed the Petraeus affair, the looming fiscal cliff, and the clean-up after Hurricane Sandy.
But Menendez was not asked about the allegations he faces regarding his own sex scandal.
Last month, the Daily Caller interviewed two women in the Dominican Republic who alleged to have had sex with Menendez in exchange for money. The women claimed that Menendez did not pay the full amount of money they were owed.
Additionally, Menendez is accused of not reporting the flight to the Dominican Republic to the Senate. The New Jersey senator has come under fire for that, too.
“New Jersey Republicans are accusing Sen. Bob Menendez (D., N.J.) of having violated Senate ethics rules by failing to disclose or seek Senate permission for air travel and lodging provided by a wealthy campaign donor,” the Washington Free Beacon reports today.
Records indicate Menendez made at least four trips on a corporate jet owned by Salomon Melgen, a Florida ophthalmologist who has donated more than $220,000 to Democratic candidates and committees since 1993. Melgen gave at least $12,600 to Menendez during that period.
Talking to Crowley on Sunday, Menendez called the Petraeus affair “unfortunate.”
“Obviously General Petraeus was a tremendous asset at the CIA,” said the New Jersey senator. “It’s unfortunate. I respect his decision under the circumstances. And I’m sure that the president will now seek out a new CIA director.”
