Cruz Won’t Commit to Supporting McConnell for Senate Majority Leader

In a live interview late last night on CNN, Texas senator Ted Cruz refused to commit to supporting Mitch McConnell for majority leader in the Senate.

“You are now going to be in the majority in the United States Senate,” said CNN host Wolf Blitzer. “Quickly, will you support Mitch McConnell as your leader in the United States Senate?”

“Well, that will be a decision for the conference to make and that will be decided next week. But I’ll tell you, tonight was a terrific night for Republicans. It was a powerful repudiation of the Obama agenda, the Obama economy, which isn’t working. And now really the responsibility falls on Republicans, now that we have been handed the majority, for us to stand up and lead, and I very much hope that’s what we do,” Cruz responded, not answering the question.

The CNN host tried again, “Well, I know that you don’t want to answer the question, but let me try one more time, because a few days ago you were sort of reluctant to make it clear you would support Mitch McConnell as the Republican, as the majority leader. The Republicans will be in the majority. Can you not tell us now whether you will or you won’t support Mitch McConnell? What is standing in the way?”

“Wolf,” said Cruz, “I will give you the same answer I did the first time you asked that question, which is that will be a decision for the conference to make next week. And tonight, what I’m focused on is the results of this election, which is a resounding Republican majority.”
