WATCH LIVE: Schumer holds press conference celebrating Democrats winning 51-seat majority

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is holding a press conference Wednesday to celebrate an expanded majority for Democrats in the Senate after Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) won reelection in a runoff.

Warnock beat Republican candidate Herschel Walker, whose controversies surrounding abortion and personal family issues followed him throughout the midterm elections and the resulting runoff on Tuesday.

The Georgia senator won with 51.4%, while Walker received 48.6%, giving Democrats a 51-49 majority in the Senate.

With a Democratic majority, Schumer will not have to share power with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. The two reached an agreement in 2020 to split responsibilities and evenly divide committee membership.

Democrats can also enjoy some leeway when it comes to voting because they can lose one vote and still pass bills through the Senate with Vice President Kamala Harris’s tiebreaking vote. They also will have an extra seat in all Senate committees, making it easier to bring prospective bills to the floor.
