Trump: Kavanaugh effect was a ‘big factor’ in GOP Senate victories

President Trump said Wednesday that Republicans’ success in Senate midterm races was largely due to Democrats’ behavior during the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

“By expanding the Senate majority, the voters have also clearly rebuked the Senate Democrats for their handling of the Kavanaugh hearings. I think that that was a factor,” the president said at the White House Wednesday. “Maybe a big factor. Tremendous energy was given to the Republican party for way that they treated then Judge Kavanaugh, now Justice Kavanaugh. And expressing their support for confirming great pro-Constitution judges.”

Republicans were able to keep the majority in the Senate Tuesday evening, picking up key seats in Indiana, North Dakota, and Missouri.

Democrats needed to pick up 23 seats in order to take control of the House, which most major polling houses pegged as a “more than likely” scenario heading into Election Day. As of Wednesday morning, Democrats had locked in a majority of 220 seats, with several races still left to call.
