The two most impressive victories in GOP Senate primaries last night were by Joni Ernst, who swept to a huge win in Iowa, and Jeff Bell, who came from behind to win a close four-way contest in New Jersey. Both are pro-Main Street populist reform conservatives who will pose a real threat to their conventional liberal opponents. And both are veterans.
But there’s one difference. Ernst is a 43-year-old veteran of the Iraq War. Bell is a 70-year-old Vietnam vet, who served in Vietnam before Ernst was born. So the voters can honor vets of both conflicts–and ensure appropriate generational diversity in the GOP caucus!–by electing both Bell and Ernst in November. We trust they’ll enjoy swapping stories next year between votes on the floor of the Senate.
