Ruben Gallego to challenge Kyrsten Sinema for Senate seat: Report

Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) is reportedly set to launch a Senate campaign to challenge Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ).

Gallego, a former Marine who was critical of Sinema long before she decided to leave the Democratic Party and become an independent, will announce his campaign on Monday, Newsweek reported.

The news does not come as a shock because Gallego has been critical of Sinema and shown his interest in challenging the Arizona senator in the past. He said in a statement after Sinema left the Democratic Party, “At a time when our nation needs leadership the most, Arizona deserves a voice that won’t back down in the face of the struggle. Unfortunately, Sen. Sinema is once again putting her own interests ahead of getting things done for Arizonans.”

Gallego will make a video announcement in English and Spanish that was shot in his home district, which includes parts of Phoenix, Newsweek reported.

Arizona Democrats grew disenchanted with Sinema over the past two years as she used her leverage in a 50-seat Democratic majority to stymie significant elements of President Joe Biden’s domestic agenda. Gallego, 43, a fourth-term congressman, answered that frustration in December with suggestions he planned to challenge Sinema in 2024 in the Democratic primary.

By registering as an independent, Sinema made a strategic move to free herself from the burden of having to win renomination in a Democratic primary, a task that looked increasingly difficult. With Gallego’s expected announcement, the 2024 election could come down to a three-way race with a Republican.
