New attack ad paints Warnock as greedy slumlord evicting low-income tenants

EXCLUSIVE — A super PAC affiliated with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) released an ad on Friday that takes aim at Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) and his church for evicting residents from its low-income apartment building for as little as $30 in back rent.

Ebenezer Baptist Church owns an apartment building in downtown Atlanta that has been purportedly evicting tenants while the church pays Warnock nearly $7,500 a month in housing allowance for being its senior pastor. The church is a 99% owner of the Columbia Tower at MLK Village, which has been described as a place for the “chronically homeless” and those trying to cope with mental disabilities.

The 30-second ad, titled “Evicted,” starts off with a snippet from a news report.

“A low-income apartment building tied to Sen. Raphael Warnock is filing eviction notices against residents,” the anchor says. It then cuts to a second news report that claims, “Court documents outline eviction notices against low-income residents for failure to pay rent.”

The announcer adds: “In fact, Raphael Warnock and Joe Biden are hurting people all over Georgia. Their reckless spending keeps driving up inflation. Higher costs on everything. Their billions in higher taxes will crush low- and middle-income Georgians. Let’s evict Raphael Warnock and stop them from hurting Georgia.”

Warnock has strongly denied the eviction allegations and called them an attempt to “sully Ebenezer Baptist Church.”

The ad is part of the Senate Leadership Fund’s $14.2 million plan to flood the Georgia airwaves in the run-up to the Dec. 6 runoff between Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker.

Neither Walker nor Warnock had enough votes for an outright victory on Nov. 8, forcing them into a runoff election. Warnock beat Walker by about 35,000 votes in the general election, with Warnock receiving 49.4% of the vote, Walker 48.5%, and Libertarian Chase Oliver 2.1%.

Almost immediately after a runoff was declared, both parties began funneling in more money for ads and field operations, trying to rally Georgia voters to come out for the candidates one more time.

Walker’s campaign has been dogged by allegations he paid for multiple abortions and has lied about domestic abuse allegations, his education, and ties to law enforcement. Warnock has labeled Walker a “pathological liar” who is unfit to serve in public office.

Walker has focused most of his campaign trying to tie Warnock to President Joe Biden’s unpopular policies and has claimed a vote for Warnock is a vote for Biden.
