Jon Tester holds higher approval rating among voters than other vulnerable Democratic senators: Poll

Vulnerable Senate Democrats are all being dragged down in their approval ratings by President Joe Biden‘s low marks, with the exception of one.

Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT) has significantly higher marks in approval rating among all voters and those who disapprove of Biden than the other incumbents in seats that are likely to be tight races in 2024, according to a Morning Consult poll conducted from January through March 2023.

Tester has an approval rating of 42% among voters who disapprove of Biden in his state, with his disapproval rate being only 49%. Between Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Bob Casey (D-PA), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), none of them have approval ratings above 34% among those voters, and only one, Casey, has a disapproval rating that is not a clear majority.

In terms of net favorability among all voters within their respective states, Tester has a remarkable gap between him and Biden. The poll shows 25% more voters rate Tester favorably than unfavorably in Montana, while Biden is rated more unfavorably by those same voters by 21%.

Among some of the most vulnerable senators in the Democratic caucus, their home state ratings are significantly lower and are more closely aligned to Biden’s rating.

In West Virginia, Manchin is rated more unfavorably at 55%-38%, while Biden is rated unfavorably at 73%-25%. In the Grand Canyon State, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) is rated more unfavorably at 44%-42%, while Biden is rated unfavorably at 57%-40%.

All of the listed senators have announced reelection bids except Manchin and Sinema. The West Virginia Democrat faces one of the toughest reelection bids if he opts to do so, with Gov. Jim Justice (R-WV) widely expected to mount a challenge against Manchin.

Justice, one of the most popular governors in the country, has an approval rating of 66%, per this poll, while Manchin’s approval rating is only 38%.

Sinema, who left the Democratic Party in December 2022 but still caucuses with the majority party, would likely face a three-way battle including herself, a Republican candidate, and Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ).

Among the wider Senate, Manchin and Baldwin find themselves among the top 10 most unpopular members of the upper chamber, while Tester cracks the list of the top 10 most popular members.
