Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was treated for dehydration Wednesday at a hospital after a workout session in the Senate gym left him feeling “lightheaded,” according to a spokesperson.
His office revealed what appears to have been a relatively brief medical episode after it said the 74-year-old had already returned to work.
“Leader Schumer was at the Senate gym this morning and got lightheaded,” a Schumer spokesperson said. “Out of an abundance of caution, he went to the hospital to be treated for dehydration and is now back at work in the Capitol.”
“He wants to remind everyone to drink some water and stay out of the heat,” the spokesperson added.
The incident came amid a scorching week in the nation’s capital, with record-setting temperatures reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit and heat indexes that have climbed even higher.
Schumer was a no-show earlier Wednesday at a press conference he was scheduled to attend with other Senate Democrats about President Donald Trump’s tax and spending bill that GOP senators are working to pass by week’s end.
