Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) skirted around a report that he is gearing up for another presidential run, saying reporters write “headlines that get clicks.”
Cruz’s possible 2028 run, reported on by Axios, would pit him against Vice President JD Vance, who hasn’t clarified whether he will run but is seen by many as President Donald Trump‘s successor. Cruz ran for president in the 2016 election cycle but conceded the Republican Party’s primary to Trump.
“You know, reporters are going to write headlines that get clicks and get eyeballs,” Cruz said on Fox News’s The Faulkner Focus. “I got a job that’s representing 31 million Texans, and it’s fighting every day for 31 million Texans. And I’ll tell you right now, the wins we are getting are historic.”
Cruz said he wrote “major portions” of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which Trump signed into law on July 4. He said “the two victories” he is most proud of regarding the bill are school choice and “the Trump accounts,” the latter of which opened the door to investment accounts for newborns.
The report on Cruz’s possible 2028 run suggests the senator will lean into his feud with commentator Tucker Carlson, who created a split among conservatives after interviewing white nationalist Nick Fuentes. Cruz defended U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee from Carlson’s criticism of him, adding that it’s “sad” to see Carlson “turn into Nick Fuentes.”
In June, an interview between Cruz and Carlson turned heated when the pair debated regime change in Iran, among other topics. Cruz later said on his podcast that Carlson has “gone batcrap crazy” on foreign policy and is “suddenly a hardcore isolationist.”
The Washington Examiner contacted Cruz’s office for comment.

Carlson speculated in March that Vance is the only candidate who can further Trump’s presidency. Former Republican Utah Sen. Mitt Romney also speculated in December 2024 that Vance will be the Republican Party’s next presidential nominee.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) denied that she is considering a 2028 White House run earlier this month. She recently criticized Republican Party leadership and Trump, who has withdrawn his support for the congresswoman.
