VIDEO: New poll shows Louisiana leaning left

In a new Gallup poll out Tuesday, Louisiana is leaning left. But that’s not necessarily a good thing for incumbent Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu and her re-election bid.

The new poll shows more Louisianans are identifying as Democratic, at 45 percent, than are identifying as Republicans, at 41 percent.

While it seems those numbers would benefit Landrieu, who is seeking her fourth term as a U.S. senator in one of the most watched Senate races of the 2014 midterm elections, it actually may indicate a more difficult race for her.

The last time Landrieu was re-elected, in 2008, Democrats had a larger advantage over Republicans. The waning Democratic advantage coupled with Louisianans’ distaste for President Obama could spell potential defeat for Landrieu, who needs 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff.

Landrieu is up against Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy in the November 4 elections.
