Poll: Lugar 44, Mourdock 42

National Journal reports on a new poll that shows incumbent Indiana senator Dick Lugar leading his primary rival, state treasurer Richard Mourdock, 44 percent to 42 percent. The group behind the poll, the Lunch Pail Republicans, is a pro-labor organization supporting Lugar.

A Mourdock-sponsored poll released last week showed Mourdock ahead of Lugar, 44 percent to 39 percent. The GOP primary on May 8 remains very close.

Mourdock, a favorite for conservatives and the Tea Party, recently earned the endorsement of Americans for Tax Reform president Grover Norquist, adding to Mourdock’s list of endorsements from prominent conservatives like Sarah Palin, the NRA, and the Club for Growth. Lugar, meanwhile, has had the endorsement of his Hoosier State protege, outgoing governor Mitch Daniels, as well as suport from establishment Republicans like the Eric Cantor-affiliated Young Guns Network.
